Most of us choose to shoot Nikon D-SLRs because of their build quality. Even Nikon’s entry-level models feel reassuringly, satisfyingly solid. And of course Nikon’s pro models feel like they’d survive a meteor strike. But build quality aside, what is it about Nikons that inspires such evangelical allegiance among the world’s top pros? What features mean the difference between nailing the front page of the world’s papers, and nailing another ‘nearly’? Well, for this issue’s feature we decided to find out – all is revealed on page 16.

One person who relies on Nikon’s build quality more than most is Icelandic landscape pro Einar Gudmann, who shared the stunning landscapes of his homeland with this issue’s Apprentice – you can find out how they got on, and how well their cameras coped, on page 52.

And if that inspires you to head outdoors with your own Nikon after a long, very wet winter, do yourself a favour and download our free gift, Outdoor Landscape &Nature Photography( see above right ). Crammed with tips, techniques and ideas, it’s sure to keep you inspired and entertained until next winter!
