The as­pect ra­tio you use should de­pend on the sub­ject – some­times you don’t want the 3:2 rec­tan­gle that’s stan­dard in mod­ern D-SLRs. You can crop later, but con­sider set­ting it in-cam­era. “I set my as­pect to 5:4 to re­duce the length of the im­age,” says Philip. “I also use square for­mat a lot, which works ex­cel­lently in gar­den pho­tog­ra­phy, where there are lots of round sub­jects.”
