What wipes

NPhoto - - Letters -

The last two times I have travelled through airport security (London Gatwick and Alicante) with my two Nikon bodies, three lenses, Speedlight, Rode mic, etc. my bag has been singled out for a quick search. Nothing is found, but this is a new search with a “swab” and has not happened before; well not since my film days and I had a lead-lined film bag. I am still carrying the same kit as I have for years.

Do you have any knowledge as to what they are searching for and why has it happened? Has it happened to other readers?

David Rhodes, Princes Risborough, UK

Swabbing with special wipes is usually done as a test for explosive residue. A quick check round the office reveals it’s happened to a few of the staff on N-Photo and its sister magazines, and it’s really nothing to worry about. Spain did raise its airport security levels back in March, which might account for why your bag was swabbed the last two times you flew.
