Our pro’s verdict…

After a prolonged dry spell, rain before our field trip triggered the appearance of some fungi. Ida spotted this polypore growing beside a mossy-coated birch tree trunk, which provided a solid frame as well as additional colour. Unlike edible mushrooms that have gills beneath the cap, this fungus has pores, and a small reflector helped to deflect light onto them. The fallen birch leaves add an autumnal element, and also provide a useful natural scale. Ida has achieved good bokeh behind the fungus, which makes it pop from the background, from where distracting green bracken stems were ‘gardened’ out of view. It’s a lovely shot!
