Ei­nar says... Spot me­ter­ing isn’t as tricky as it sounds. In man­ual mode, sim­ply set the aper­ture you want (in this case f/5.6), point the ac­tive AF point at a mid-tone (such as the grey feath­ers of our gull) and then up the ISO un­til the shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the ac­tion. You can of course do this on a static bird, or any other mid-tone, to make it eas­ier!
