When buying a standard zoom, we’ve too long had to choose between a fast, constant f/2.8 aperture or optical stabilisation. This revamp of Nikon’s previous 24-70mm for FX D-SLRs has changed that, giving us the best of both worlds. Like the Nikon DX 16-80mm, its new VR system offers a four-stop advantage, as verified by CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association).

Further highlights shared with the 16-80mm lens include an electromagnetically controlled diaphragm; Nano Crystal Coat to banish ghosting and flare; and fluorine coatings to repel muck and moisture. Its AF speed is also faster than in Nikon’s previous 24-70mm. For a not-so-standard standard zoom, this lens is as good as it gets.

BUY if… You want a fast maximum aperture, VR and the latest high-tech mod cons, in a robust package built for pro use.
