In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of using photo-sharing sites?

That’s a really interesting question. I will start with the cons! There are a lot of people who attempt first and foremost to build a large following, but who may not always be focused on quality. That results in some people who have mediocre work developing a large following, simply because they are able to interact with other people and like and comment and follow them in an exchange sort of format. There is also a lot of talk in the online community about people copying other users’ shots, and about certain places becoming incredibly popular to shoot, to the point where they end up having to restrict access to them.

But on the positive side, I think that by everyone taking photos of the same sorts of places and subjects there’s a lot of inspiration that’s now available to people through social media and photo sharing. Just 15 years or so ago, you had to go and buy a book on photography and flick through it for ideas and help. Now, you can open up your web browser and have instant access to thousands of beautiful images and sources of inspiration.
