Big Cat Mud Bath

One morning in Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve, lions had caught a buffalo and the pride was eating its fill. In the struggle, the lions all ended up in a mud hole and became covered in black mud, their eyes glowing golden. It was hard to get the right angle for a photo; looking directly into the hole, we needed to carefully manoeuvre the vehicle into position to get a clear shot through the many long tufts of grass. When we returned later in the afternoon, the lions were surprisingly clean again; they must have spent the day cleaning themselves. Nikon D800E, 400mm f/2.8, 1/500 sec, f/4.8, ISO560
