How to stop the shakes
Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) 18-55mm lens can offer between three and four stops of additional ‘handholdability’. In other words, you should be able to get sharp results when you’re holding the camera at shutter speeds three or four stops slower than recommended. The rule of thumb recommendation is to use a shutter speed that matches the focal length – so 1/40 sec for a 40mm lens on a full-frame FX body, or 1/60 sec on a DX camera when you take the 1.5x crop into account. With VR you should be able to get sharp results at around 1/5 sec (FX) or 1/8 sec (DX).
