Step by Step

Reflect in Photoshop

1 Crop in tight

While this project is all about using reflections, there are sometimes none to hand, so instead you could try image flipping. Our starting image here was made by painting with a light-up toy lightsaber. Once open in Photoshop, crop the image at an interesting point.

2 Extend the canvas

Hit Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate the background layer. Next, use the Crop tool again, but this time drag one of the sides outwards beyond the centre edge of the frame to double the width of the image canvas to make room for the flipped half. Hit Enter to apply.

3 Flip and move

Go to Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal then use the Move tool to drag the layer across to the other side. Once flipped, the symmetry creates an effect almost like one of those inkblot Rorschach tests psychologists use. Add any tonal effects you like to finish it off.
