ON1 is touting Photo RAW as an all-in-one RAW processor and photo editor, and it lived up to its name by opening RAW files from recently released cameras that other apps failed to recognise. You’re then greeted by enough preset effects to rival Exposure X2, including 48 film emulations, plus lots of generic retro looks.

But that’s just the start. In addition to the extensive selection of preset adjustment sliders, you’ve also got a layers section, masking features, intelligent eraser, clone stamp and batch processing tools, plus much more.

This plug-in can easily cut it as a standalone editor, but its features also make it the most intimidating option here, with its cluttered interface and multiple workspaces. Photo RAW is also a touch slower than some of its rivals, despite ON1’s claims that it’s faster than ever.

Photo RAW runs on Macs and PCs and is compatible with Lightroom 5 or later. It requires 4GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent processor. It supports JPEG, TIFF, PSD, PSB, PNG and RAW files.

Pros Good preset selection; crammed with extra features; top-notch RAW support Cons Some presets slow to load; relatively complex to learn We say

Superb standalone software, but other plug-ins are better suited to film emulation Overall score

After more than just film effects? Photo RAW also packs HDR looks, glows and lens effects
