ARWP Spec Aspira Waterproof Smock
£315 (around $390) www.paramo.co.uk
This smock goes all out to be the ultimate photography garment. It’s worn more like a jumper than a jacket, but a large zippered front flap lets the smock hang comfortably when crouching.
Closeable armpit vents increase comfort in hot environments, as does the breathable Nikwax Analogy fabric. This is great at repelling water, and the rain resistance continues with an excellent wraparound hood that includes a stiffened peak. The attention to detail continues courtesy of reinforced fabric to protect the lower arms when you lie low, and foam inserts in the back panel that cushion a backpack.
The only weak link is gear storage, as this smock is designed solely for wildlife photography where you’d use super telephoto lenses that can’t be carried in clothing. You do get a single spacious front pocket for kit, but the two chest pockets are small and accessed via noisy Velcro.
Carefully considered design; very comfortable; great weather protection
Limited storage for camera kit; quite pricey
Uncompromising all-weather attire for hard-core wildlife photographers Overall score
