Check ex­po­sures with the his­togram

It can be tough to tell whether you have nailed the ex­po­sure just by look­ing at the im­age on an LCD screen. In bright trop­i­cal sun­light it will ap­pear too dark; if shoot­ing night pho­tog­ra­phy it will look too light. Don’t just base ex­po­sure de­ci­sions on the im­age; learn how to read the his­togram for a de­fin­i­tive ex­po­sure as­sess­ment. You can also use the high­light in­di­ca­tor, which will flash to show any blown high­lights.
