Nikon filed a trademark application for the Nikkor brand name in July 1931 and it became a registered trademark in December 1932. ‘Nikko’ is an abbreviation of the ‘Nippon Kougaku’ company name, with the ‘R’ added simply because it was a suffix for photographic lens names at that point in time.
