My ini­tial images of this Marsh Fritillary were slightly soft due to my shut­ter speed be­ing too slow. To en­able me to set a faster shut­ter speed Ross sug­gested I in­crease my ISO, but he didn’t want be go­ing up above 800, as he was con­cerned about noise. My shut­ter speed still wasn’t quite fast enough, so I opened up my aper­ture from f/11 to f/8. This re­duced the depth of field slightly, but by com­pos­ing the shot so that the en­tire but­ter­fly was on the same plane of fo­cus (see right), I was able to en­sure most of it was pin-sharp.
