Richard says… A tele­con­verter en­ables you to get closer to wildlife, by in­creas­ing a lens’s fo­cal length. A 1.4x tele­con­verter would in­crease the fo­cal length of a 300mm f/2.8 lens to 420mm – but re­duce its max­i­mum aper­ture by one stop to f/4. A 2x tele­con­verter dou­bles fo­cal length to 600mm, but at the ex­pense of two stops max­i­mum aper­ture, in this case f/5.6.
