When it comes to shooting the aurora many things are beyond your control – not least whether it actually appears. However, one thing you can control is your composition. On our trip to the Lofoten Islands we earmarked likely locations, like beaches and lakes, that had a clear view northwards. Then, after dark, we drove around these spots (on a shooting trip like this, a car becomes your home from home). The display is beautiful, but, like a glorious sunset, needs context. Framing mountains, trees or buildings in the foreground provides this context.
