Editing tips

Enhance your aurora photos

1 Reduce the noise

Make sure you shoot your aurora photos in Raw. To edit them, open them in Camera Raw and begin by adjusting the tones. Next head to the Detail panel. This is where you can reduce image noise. Increase Luminance Amount until the noise lessens.

2 Boost the colour

If the aurora colours look weak, try increasing Vibrance in the Basic panel. To take it further, grab the Targeted Adjustment tool from the Toolbar, right-click and choose Saturation, then drag upwards over the greens in the aurora to increase the saturation.

3 Selective adjustments

Often, areas of night photos need selective tweaks to bring out detail, like the reflection on the lake here. Grab the Adjustment Brush from the Toolbar, click the plus next to Exposure to load the brush with a brightening effect, then paint over areas to lift them.
