AS a boy growing up in Cairns in the 1940s, John Quinn and his brothers made boats from sheets of galvanised roofing iron.
The enterprising youngsters would fill up the nail holes in the roofing iron with bitumen off the streets and it was anchors aweigh.
Fast forward to 2009 and John is now celebrating 50 years in the boating industry.
It was a calling that was in his blood — John’s father had a marine engineering business in Cairns.
John ran Quinn Marine in Cairns for 17 years before selling the business in 1976 and moving to Darwin where he set up ABC Marine in Bagot Rd, Coconut Grove where McDonald’s now stands.
He shifted to his present premises in Winnellie in 1988.
John is a keen boat enthusiast and loves to see customers young and old get a kick out of fishing and boating.
‘‘It’s great to see the enjoyment families get out of boating,’’ he said.
‘‘I like seeing kids catch a fish for first time or people having fun taking part in water sports.’’
John has seen a lot of changes in his 50 years in the marine business.
‘‘When I started, you were doing well if you had a 2hp to 3hp outboard motor,’’ John said. ‘‘Now you can buy a 300hp engine. ‘‘And in those days there were no aluminium boats, they were all wood.
‘‘Then fibreglass took over and now aluminium is taking over.’’
John will celebrate his 70th birthday this long weekend with his five sons and sister.
To celebrate his golden anniversary in the marine business, John is giving away a $500 gift voucher with every boat sold and delivered in August.
ABC Marine is at 22 Winnellie Rd, Winnellie. Phone 8947 0882.
