Merc hogs spotlight

HE Mercedes Benz SLK 350 had me at hello. It is stylish, sleek and oozes cool.

I thought I’d impress my mum while she was visiting from Sydney by picking her up from Darwin Airport in the SLK 350.

TThat was a bad move. Let’s just say she acknowledged the car and its features before she did me.

It was child neglect in its purest form.

So feeling abandoned, alone and frightened, I pressed a button in the SLK 350 while still stationary and the electric hard-top roof conveniently somersaulted into the boot with minimal fuss.

The coupe-like silhouette transformed into a sundrenched roadster and we were off to a glamorous start.

Under the bonnet is an invigorating 200 kW 3.5 litre V-6 petrol engine that is super responsive and easily capable of downing the 0-100km/h sprint in well under six seconds.

Getting there is not all about the sensation of quick acceleration, the noise of the dual exhausts growling at the throttle pressure is spine-tingling.

With the wind in our hair (according to my mum, it did minimal damage to her much-loved bob) and the aluminium pedals at my feet it was time to give the SLK 350 a run for its money.

The eye-catching beauty is not for the faint-hearted.

With a RRP of $140,642, it’s also not for the poor.
