IN the week Japan broke Australian hearts at the Asian Cup final, its car industry has recorded a resounding victory over Australia’s auto makers.

The Socceroos lost only 1-0, but in yesterday’s monthly sales bulletin, Japanese-made cars outsold local products by almost four to one 27,516 to 7248.

This is one of the lowest local returns in recent years, less than 10 per cent of the 73,824 new vehicle deliveries in January.

Australian consumers also continue to much prefer Thai (12,256) and Korean (12,035) to local fare.
