Victory plays High-Ball
IT’S high-stakes fashion in the world of American heavy metal cruiser bikes.
Victory came along just over a decade ago to cash in on Harley Davidson’s success and entered the Australian market less than three years ago.
The Victory range arrived with loads of chrome and bright customised paint jobs like something from an episode of US reality show American Chopper.
But the latest custom trend is meaner and leaner.
Harley was first on this bandwagon with its range of ‘‘Dark’’ bikes.
Now Victory is following suit with its sleek all-black High-Ball due to arrive here early in the second half of the year.
One week after its worldwide debut in New York the grungy bobber-style bike made an appearance at the recent opening of Victory’s company-owned Sydney dealership in Ashfield.
It is the second companyowned Victory store in the world with the first being in Melbourne. Victory now has six dealers in Australia with the others in Brisbane, Mackay, Newcastle and Perth, plus one in Auckland. The High-Ball bobber has adjustable high-rise bars, white wall tyres and a low 635mm seat. It comes in one colour scheme: matte black with a white tank cover.
Victory marketing assistant Robert Rosengarten says they do not have a retail price ‘‘at this stage’’.
‘‘People that will buy them may be looking for something that is comfortable and easy to ride but is also all black and looks tough,’’ Rosengarten said. ‘‘It is a bike that looks to the future while respecting the past.’’
One of the bike’s unique features is the handlebars which can be adjusted to be upright or laid back.
In either position, the controls and cables can be quickly adjusted with tools.
The High-Ball is powered by Victory’s 106 fuel-injected V-twin and features a solo seat and a two-into-one exhaust.
Rosengarten says Victory sales are ‘‘above our targets’’, especially high-spec models.
Last year they sold 198, compared with 37.5 per cent from 144 the previous year.
Victory is owned by Polaris, an American manufacturer of snowmobiles, and all-terrain as well as side-byside vehicles.
