Trio battle for world car award

A pair of Europe’s best lux­ury cars are bat­tling Ja­pan’s new green star for the big­gest prize in world mo­tor­ing. The flag­ship Audi A8 and BMW’s mid-sized 5 Se­ries are com­pet­ing with the Nis­san Leaf to be­come the sev­enth win­ner of the 2011 World Car of the Year award. The three fi­nal­ists were culled from an orig­i­nal list of 39 con­tenders, with the win­ner an­nounced at the open­ing of the New York Auto Show on April 21. Apart from the over­all World COTY award, jour­nal­ists from 24 coun­tries are also vot­ing on awards for per­for­mance cars, green cars and au­to­mo­tive de­sign.
