Driv­ers want to keep it sim­ple

VOICE-based nav­i­ga­tion is safer than other meth­ods in­clud­ing printed maps, ac­cord­ing to a US study. The Vir­ginia Tech Trans­porta­tion In­sti­tute study com­pared a smart­phone app, satnav, satnav with turn-by-turn di­rec­tions, des­ti­na­tion down­loads and printed maps and di­rec­tions. It found nearly 87 per cent of driv­ers pre­ferred ‘‘sim­ple, quick in­struc­tions’’, and more than 80 per cent said they’d opt for the ‘‘least-com­pli­cated’’ nav­i­ga­tion op­tion.
