Darwin debuts huge new camping show

NT News - Motoring - - FRONT PAGE - By DAMIEN MCCARTNEY

HEAVEN for four-wheel-drivers, campers and caravaners will be the Darwin Showgrounds this weekend, for the first Darwin 4WD, Caravan and Outback Camping Expo.

Held over a massive two days, the expo will show off the biggest and best in the world of the outdoors.

Director Alan Roger said Darwin has never seen anything like it.

‘‘We’re really trying to focus on the Top End lifestyle, and that means spending a lot of time outdoors,’’ he said.

Mr Roger said anyone with any sort of remote interest in the outdoors should head down.

‘‘We’re really aiming this event at families.

‘‘So there is going to be some big blow-up toys for the kids, live demonstrations on recovery and that sort of thing for the parents — it’s going to be huge.’’

Mr Roger said he hoped to ‘‘fill a niche market that hasn’t been looked after much in the recent past’’.

He said organisers were also impressed with the large number of interstate companies and suppliers that have jumped on board.

‘‘We’ve had a huge uptake of companies from not just around Darwin and the rest of the NT, but from all around the country,’’ he said.

‘‘People will be seeing all the latest and greatest in technology, in gadgets, in everything to tyres.’’

Mr Roger said all the weird and wonderful all-terrain vehicles would be out too.

‘‘We’ve got six-wheel ATVs, buggies, cookware, storage, GPS systems, satphones, EPIRBs, and then a huge range of camp trailers that pop away to next to nothing. ‘‘It’s huge.’’ There will be a massive demonstration track, where companies from across the country will be putting their modified vehicles to the test.

Experts will also be using the track to bog themselves, and to deliberately put themselves in difficult situations, to show punters how best to get out of them.

‘‘Every aspect of the community has their place in this expo.

‘‘We have recruited the help of the scouts and a local school, so everyone will benefit.’’

The event will wrap up on both days by the sultry sounds of Australian Blues Awards finalists, the Flamin’ Crows.

The Flamin’ Crows incorporate bits and pieces from the acoustic, slide and electric blues spectrum and will showcase a great repertoire of driving original blues music and toe-tapping adapted classics.

The trio land on stage at 5pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday. The show will feature material from their debut original album Pie in the Sky.
