Geely steps into luxury

BIG brother Geely has grabbed Volvo’s luxury concept car and now plans to make it in China.

The 2011 Volvo Concept Universe, a freehand saloon designed to propel the Swede into the ranks of BMW’s 7-Series and Audi’s A8, appeared on Geely’s Shanghai motor show stand.

At the same time, Volvo kes its own drivelines but there are currently no plans for any engine larger than 2.4-litres.

In fact a Geely publication on its drivelines — including its DSI transmission plant in Albury — shows its most powerful engine will be a 132kW 1.8-litre fourcylinder turbocharged petrol unit.

Sadly, it diminishes the performance potential of the concept car’s shape.
