Motorcyclist killed in Stuart Hwy crash
A MOTORCYCLIST killed on a morning ride in the Darwin rural area has been remembered as a great husband and mate.
Bill Thorneycroft, 50, died when his bike collided with a car while travelling towards the city at the intersection of the Stuart Hwy and Virginia Rd at 6.15am yesterday.
Mr Thorneycroft’s bike collided with the car as it attempted to turn right onto the highway.
His bike was left at the intersection as police attempted to piece together moments before the crash.
Friends and family yesterday remembered Mr Thorneycroft in touching posts on social media. Mr Thorneycroft was described as a “great man” and as a “top bloke who has gone too soon.”
Another person paid tribute to Mr Thorneycroft as a great husband and mate.
“I hope you’re up there drinking a XXXX gold and riding high as we will have a drink for you Billy. You have touched so many of us, you were a mate, a great husband,” the tribute read.
“It’s always hard to lose someone who has given us all so much to remember, all the laughter, jokes, drunken billy moments and even a fight. You always brought joy to us no matter what situation we were in.”
Sergeant Darren Robson said police were investigating if speed was a factor in the crash.
He said the 25-year-old driver of the Subaru was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“The motorcyclist was heading in towards Darwin. “The motorcycle rider has collided with the driver side of the sedan and unfortunately the impact of the collision has resulted in a fatality,” he said.
“The driver of the Subaru presented with no injuries on the scene but he was very upset and shaken. He’s been taken up to the hospital via ambulance for assessment.”
It is the second fatal motorbike crash on Territory roads in a month following the death of Danny Lee, 34, three weeks after a crash on the Stuart Hwy at Coolalinga.
The Territory road toll stands at 12, compared to 14 at the same time last year.
