Heavyweights lock horns in final rematch
THE long-awaited grand final rematch between Easts and the Nightcliff University Tigers has finally arrived in Darwin men’s A-grade hockey.
Easts were heartbroken after their 2-1 loss in the 2016 decider, after the Tigers’ Jaidan McGregor scored the golden goal with 81 seconds left in double extra-time.
But Easts playing-coach Jamie Hullick has not lost any sleep before both teams clash again at Marrara tonight.
“This match will be a good measuring stick for where we’re at, but I’m not fussed about the result,” Hullick said.
Easts lost the experience of former playing-coach Sam Clifton, Michael Quan and Alex Kilburn before this year. But they have notched up wins against Banks, Commerce Pints and Waratahs, the last two being big 13-0 and 7-0 wins respectively. They also drew 4-4 with St Mary’s.
“We’ve had a few outs from last year, so it’s a pretty new team,” Hullick said. “But our young guys are stepping up and reaching the same standards of last year.”
The Tigers have not lost a match from their four games.
Banks v Commerce Pints (this afternoon) and St Mary’s v Waratahs (tomorrow night) are the other top-grade men’s matches.
There will also be a blockbuster in women’s A-grade when Waratahs (first) take on St Mary’s (second) tomorrow night.
Banks v Commerce Pints and Easts v Tigers are also tonight.
