YouTube bringing live rugby to fans
NTRU Round 7 first grade action will be streamed live on YouTube today with commentary from Charlie King.
The grand final rematch between South Darwin and Palmerston at 5.15pm will be available to watch throughout the world on NTRU’s online channel.
It will be followed by the Swampdogs vs. Casuarina clash at 7pm.
King said it was an initiative that would give fans the opportunity to take a closer look at the competition and the people who make it tick.
“I think it’s a great thing they are doing and I congratulate them for making the effort. It is really is the way of the modern world,” he said.
The coverage will involve people behind the scenes at each club who have stories to share.
“In the first few games it should be about not what happens out on the field, the game is still being played and that’s fine as a backdrop, but we need to meet the people who have been involved in this sport for such a long time,” King said.
“I’m really keen to share that with them, get those people on so they can tell their story and we can talk about the game, with their comment on it.
“Let’s meet them and listen to what they have to say. It’s a great opportunity.”
NTRU CEO Mark Heath said it was a concept he planned to continue in the future.
“James de Dassel (Souths President) has spoken to me about it and we’ve agreed to trial it and see how it goes. If it’s viable for us, we will try and do it next year on a more regular scale,” he said.
“It’s something that give us a broader scope to get out to the supporters of the clubs that are not only here in Darwin, but around the rest of Australia.
“Charlie used to call the matches back for us when then ABC used to do a Saturday afternoon live stream. It’s something to move the sport further forward. We’ve got to try as many avenues as we can.” Fans can tune in by going to https://www.youtube.com/ user/ntrugbyunion.
