Draftee contracts ‘ridiculous’

BRISBANE coach Chris Fagan says it is “borderline ridiculous’’ that top AFL draft picks have to make life-changing contract decisions so early in their careers.

Out-of-contract Lions key forward Josh Schache is reportedly being shopped to Melbourne clubs by his management for an alleged deal of about $3.5 million over five years.

Schache, 19, is only 23 games into his senior career after being taken at pick No.2 in the 2015 draft.

He has been dropped for tonight’s clash with Adelaide at the Gabba after poor form in the past month left Brisbane with no choice but to send him back to the NEAFL.

Fagan said the initial contracts for first-round draft picks should be extended from the current two-year deals to three or four years.
