1971: Dis­graced drug cheat Lance Arm­strong is born in Plano, Texas. Arm­strong won seven Tour de France ti­tles but was later banned for il­le­gal drug use.

1977: US 12-me­tre yacht Coura­geous beats Aus­tralia 4-0 in the Amer­ica’s Cup off New­port Rhode Is­land. 1993: Ter­ri­to­rian Michael Long stars in Essendon’s 11-point come­back win over Ade­laide in the pre­lim­i­nary fi­nal. The Bombers came from 42 points down at half­time.

1994: Mel­bourne’s Garry Lyon boots 10 goals in his side’s 79-point win over the West­ern Bull­dogs in the AFL first semi-fi­nal.

1997: Sev Balles­teros and Nick Faldo elected to the World Golf Hall Of Fame.

1999: Carl­ton beat Essendon by one point in a huge AFL pre­lim­i­nary fi­nal up­set. Fraser Brown’s goal sav­ing tackle on Essendon’s Dean Wal­lis seals the re­sult for the Blues.

2008: English soc­cer club Portsmouth makes its Euro­pean de­but, beat­ing Vi­to­ria de Guimaraes 2-0 in the UEFA Cup.

2013: Heavy­weight boxer and WBC cham­pion in 1978, Ken Nor­ton, dies in Hen­der­son, Ne­vada, aged 70.
