More than 450 given home cash

NT News - - NEWS -

ALMOST half of the Gunner Government’s first homebuyers grants handed out have been for the purchase of homes in Darwin and its surrounding northern suburbs.

Figures released by the NT Government show 745 residents Territory-wide have purchased their first home using the new stamp duty discount, and 458 applications have been approved for the $10,000 home renovation grant.

First homebuyer applications approved Territory-wide as of October 9 were 338 in Darwin and surrounding areas, 182 in Palmerston, 50 in Darwin rural area, 152 in Alice Springs, 17 in Katherine, five in Tennant Creek and one on the Tiwi Islands.

Treasurer Nicole Manison said she was pleased with the number of Territorians choosing to buy their first home.

“There is a need to grow our population ... it’s critical to growing our economy and to develop the north,” Ms Manison said.

“So it’s fantastic to see our first homeowner stamp duty discount policy and home renovation grants, introduced immediately upon coming to Government, benefiting so many Territorians”

Until the end of August 2018, recipients of the homebuyers grant are also entitled to receive a $10,000 Home Renovation Package.
