A man of many jackets
TV anchor, socialite, business advocate, Zerbe is...
IF you live in Palmerston, chances are you know Wayne Zerbe, or have at least heard of him.
Mr Zerbe shifted up to live in the Territory in the 1970s and for many years he has been regarded as the unofficial mayor of Palmerston.
Many people would know of Mr Zerbe’s passion for growing and improving the city of Palmerston and it is no surprise that the local man was the founder of the Palmerston Regional Business Association.
“I started the association in 1998 and have been the president of it ever since — we currently have around 500 members which is fantastic,” he said.
As well as being one of Palmerston’s biggest movers and shakers, Mr Zerbe spends much of his time in front of and behind cameras.
Every week for the past 17 years, the Driver resident has been filming episodes of Around Palmerston, a Southern Cross television show which puts the Palmerston community in the spotlight. “We do all sorts of stuff with
Around Palmerston, but we try and focus on community events,” Mr Zerbe explained.
In light of the local Nine News broadcast recently being cut in the Top End, Mr Zerbe felt it was important now more than ever that Territorians continued to have local content on their television screens.
“It’s so vital that we have local television content as we are a long way from any other place in the country — locals need to see what’s happening in our community,” he said. When Mr Zerbe isn’t presenting to the camera, one of his favourite hobbies is getting behind the lens capturing the incredible landscapes across Australia.
“I’ve been a photographer for 47 years which is how I started my own publishing wholesale company,” he said.
“Over the years I’ve produced around 30 pictorial books on the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Norfolk lsland as well as postcards and all sorts of other pictorial stuff, which has been very enjoyable.” When he’s not working, Mr Zerbe can be found spending time with his family, riding his bike around the streets of Palmerston or attending to his garden. ↘ The NT News Everyday Territorian series shares the stories of people of all ages and backgrounds who call the Top End home. The catch is, the person who is featured chooses the next Territorian. Check out next Saturday’s NT News to see who Wayne Zerbe picked.
