Teen crim to be out on Monday
A TEENAGER who led police on several high-speed chases after stealing a car from a home in Parap has been sentenced to 12 months’ jail.
Channel 9 reported the 17year-old’s sentence was suspended after five months and, with time served, meant he would be released from Don Dale on Monday.
The teen pleaded guilty to stealing a Toyota Kluger from a Parap home about 5am on July 26 before leading police on chases across Darwin and Palmerston. Video showed it being driven on the wrong side of Bagot Rd not long before it eventually crashed, on the corner of Ross Smith and Hudson Fysh avenues in Parap.
The teenager was previously repeatedly granted bail by former youth court judge Sue Oliver, and breached it, including by committing a robbery on a taxi driver, refusing drug tests and possessing methamphetamine and a syringe. The keys to the Kluger were stolen from inside the Parap home – after entry was forced through a laundry door – not far from a sleeping toddler and baby.
A victim impact statement stated perpetrators “need to understand the mental impact this type of offending has on their victims”.
