Hunt for brave trio
Bid to thank life savers
TERRITORY crash survivor Tim Duncan is searching for three Aboriginal men who helped save his life following a horror car accident in 2009.
Mr Duncan shared his story of survival with ABC Darwin in May, and has now teamed up with the public broadcaster to track down his rescuers and thank them for their efforts.
Mr Duncan, a former Katherine doctor, suffered lifethreatening injuries after his car rolled in February 2009 in Kakadu National Park.
“I just finished working for a couple of months in Katherine Hospital and my then girlfriend Hannah came up to join me and together we were going to drive back through Kakadu National Park,” he told ABC Radio.
“On the road to Cooinda, that was all fine, but we were rushing back on a late afternoon/early evening to get to Darwin to meet our friends and catch our flight out the next morning.
“Coming along the West Arnhem Hwy at dusk, I was keen to get a cricket score … I leaned down to tune in the radio to see if we could pick up a signal.
“As I was fumbling through the dial and I had my eyes off the road, Hannah shouted out, ‘Timbo!’ and I quickly looked up and instinctively swerved, even though there was nothing on the road to hit.” Quickly, the car started to fishtail, completely out of control.
“My heart sank, I knew we were in trouble,” Mr Duncan said.
“We were going at 130km/h, the legal limit … the last thing I remember was putting my arm up to brace for the crash as the road came closer and closer as the car rolled.”
The car rolled six times into scrubland, before landing upside down.
“I lost consciousness and thought I was dead. The next thing I saw was this smiling black face looking down on me,” Mr Duncan said. “It was an Aboriginal man, two of his friends behind him.” The three Aboriginals stayed with the couple until the ambulance arrived from Jabiru.
He’s now searching for the brave trio to thank them. The NT’s current road toll now sits at 42, compared to 23 for the same time last year.
