The plot thickens in Brittany’s tragic death
Brittany Murphy mystery deepens
An explosive new tell-all book digs up more questions about the late star’s tragic death
There’s always been an air of mystery surrounding the 2009 death of actress Brittany Murphy at just 32. But now the brand-new book A Case For Murder: Brittany Murphy Files has shed new light on the tragedy, with author Bryn Curt exploring whether her passing really was down to illness or something more sinister. What really killed her? The official cause of death given was pneumonia and anaemia, but in 2013, Brittany’s dad Angelo Bertolotti pushed to reopen the case, claiming high levels of toxic heavy metals were found in Brittany’s hair when he had it tested, suggesting she’d been poisoned.
But according to Bryn, prescription drugs may have played a part.
In the book, he claims the actress died on a bed surrounded by a “mountain of clothes, make-up, perfumes, an oxygen machine and medical supplies… It was a ready-made drug store.”
Living in squalor
Bryn also reveals that despite her A-list status, the star wasn’t exactly enjoying five-star life. “The large bed was stained and the sheets twisted and drenched in sweat,” he claims of her bedroom in her Hollywood Hills home, which was put on the market last week (see right). “Flanking each side of the bed were nightstands covered in… half-drunk bottles of water, prescription medication bottles, some open and some empty, and used tissues.”
Did Brittany’s husband do it?
Suspicion has long been cast over the star’s husband-of-twoyears Simon Monjack, who passed away just five months after Brittany in eerily similar circumstances. Bryn adds weight to the theories that Simon was far from the perfect husband, by revealing details about his strange behaviour in the lead-up to Britt’s last days. According to Jay Pickett, Britt’s co-star on 2009’s Abandoned – her last film – the cast and crew were left scratching their heads after Simon insisted on doing his wife’s make-up for the movie. “That did strike me as odd,” admits Jay, who also reveals that Brittany would act “silent and withdrawn” when her husband was around. “We would be having a conversation and she would see him coming and just change,” Jay, 55, adds.
And Simon’s strange ways didn’t end there. Bryn claims the British screenwriter seemed “spaced out” as paramedics tried to revive his wife on December 20 and that “he was very disconnected from the situation around him… He was visibly on a lot of medication.”
Simon raised suspicions further when he pleaded with staff at LA’S Cedars-sinai Medical Center not to perform an autopsy on Britt’s body.
Bryn also addresses claims that Simon and Brittany’s mum Sharon began sharing a bed after the star’s death.
“That’s disgusting,” Sharon told People mag in April 2010. “We’re close friends and we’re family.”
However, it was Simon’s next move that really made people uncomfortable…
Rather than taking time out to mourn, following Britt’s
‘HE WAS THERE FOR SELF- GAIN, HE MADE MY SKIN CRAWL’
funeral, Bryn claims Simon – who was dubbed “Conjack” by some because of his dodgy dealings – immediately began working on a tell-all about the late star and “the producers and talent reps he believed had slaughtered his wife behind the scenes, spreading rumours that she was always late and had the inability to remember her lines”.
Eyebrows were raised again when Simon and Sharon announced a public memorial for the late star – but it would cost fans more than $1000 each to attend.
When their behaviour got the side-eye, the pair cancelled their plans, blaming “family illness”.
But there was one big event Simon wasn’t missing for the world – the 2010 Oscars.
According to Bryn, an insider revealed, “He was trying to get his name on the guest lists for the afterparties. It was obvious he was only there for self-gain, he made my skin crawl.”
Change too late
And perhaps Brittany felt the same way – because, according to her dad, just days before she died the actress vowed she was moving on. “Brittany wanted a different kind of life and she was going to move to New York,” he reveals in the book. “She was so excited to start a new life.” But as her devastated fans know all too well, Brittany never got that chance... n
