He may play incestuous villain Jaime Lannister on Game Of Thrones, but Nikolaj Coster-waldau’s transformation into an inked gangster is his meanest role yet – and as far away from fantasy as you could imagine. In Shot Caller, Nikolaj plays Jacob Harlon, a successful stockbroker who takes on a new life as ruthless thug Money after a fatal DUI accident sends him down the rabbit hole of the American prison system. It’s there he becomes caught between two rival gangs, ultimately linking up with white supremacists, and proving his cred by slaughtering a snitch. Toggling between two time periods – during Jacob’s initiation into the system and a decade after – Shot Caller explores how a good family man can become the bad guy. Though Nikolaj says he found it difficult to transform into Money, it was nothing a few visits to real-life prisons – and a lot of trips to the gym – didn’t sort out. Not that Nikolaj enjoyed adding 10kg to his naturally lean frame. “There is something... horrible about eating more than you think you need when you’re already full,” he says. As for what it’s like behind bars, well, he definitely got a wake-up call... “Prison is not like The Shawshank Redemption or Orange Is the New Black, which is very good by the way – I watch it with my two sisters,” laughs Nikolaj. is out November 30
