Huge fuel savings with no loss of performance
The Ford AOD (automatic overdrive) transmission was introduced in 1980 as an answer to demands for better fuel economy and improved drivability. It was one of the first transmissions of its type and also one of the simplest by design. Using an AOD or (AODE) instead of a C4/C6. in a performance vehicle gives you a .76:1 overdrive ratio — the RPM and fuel savings are huge with no loss of power. Rear-axle ratios from 3.7:1 to 4.3:1 still allow cruising RPM of 1800–2200 at 100kph. Plenty of aftermarket parts available.
