The Nova nameplate originated as an option on the first generation of Chevrolet’s Chevy II compact car. It was originally only available with six-cylinder power, although small blocks were available as dealer-installed options, until the 283ci small block was made a factory V8 option in 1964.

The third generation of Chevrolet’s compact car, introduced in 1968, became known simply as the ‘Nova’. This was the first Nova with factory-optional big block engine — the Nova SS could be had with a 396ci big block and Muncie M21 or M22 four-speed manual, or TH400 automatic.

Don Yenko’s Yenko Chevrolet dealership produced a limited number of heavily modified third-generation Novas, featuring uprated suspension and underpinnings to support the powerful 427ci big block. Only 37 of those cars were produced, and they are now among the most desirable cars from the muscle car era.
