The 50th NZ Nationals, which was the final round in the NZDRA championship series, saw an impressive field of more than 200 cars hit the tarmac at Masterton Motorplex on the weekend of March 18–19. Plenty of new PBs were run, as entrants vied for valuable national championship points. However, it was Riverton street-car racer, Brendon Shearing, who was the talk of the event on day one. Having tweaked his twin-turbo, 509ci big block Chev–powered Monaro during the previous week, he stunned onlookers with a seven-second pass straight off the trailer. Better still, he backed it up, dropping to a best of 7.95 at 173mph the following day. Understandably, Brendon and his crew were stoked with the milestone achievement, which he’s only the second local racer to achieve. Better still, he assures us that there’s still more potential in the combination!
