Raising kids sure isn’t easy – just ask Kristen Bell! The star opened up about life or death situations during a September 28 appearance on The Late Show

with Stephen Colbert, specifically three-year-old daughter Delta’s temper tantrums over sweet treats.

‘If I tell her, like, “OK, that’s a wrap on the candy bar,” or whatever, she’ll go, “Well, I’m gonna get a gun and kill you and I only like Daddy,” and she’ll just leave the room,’ she shared. ‘I know it sounds really bad that my child threatens to kill me, but like, she doesn’t have a gun, so I feel like it’s not a real threat.’

In fact anything and everything is up for discussion with Kristen and her hubby of five years Dax Shepard, who

also share a five-year-old daughter, Lincoln. ‘We talk to our girls very openly and honestly,’ Kristen says. ‘We decided when we had kids that we’d never, sort of, spin a fairytale. Even if it’s hard subjects.’ That includes serious issues such as Dax’s 14 years of sobriety. ‘He goes to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting every Tuesday night,’ The Good Place actress, 38, reveals. ‘Sometimes they say, “I want to go to one.” And because he’s a comedian, he says, “Don’t worry, you will!” So we keep it light.’ The couple have also tackled questions about the birds and bees. ‘We usually have a conversation about it with each other beforehand to be prepped,’ she says. ‘Like, when they asked about sex, we said, “Well, Mum has a vagina, and Dad has a penis, and there’s sperm, and an ovum, and they connect, and it makes a baby.”’ While it’s sometimes tempting to give a G-rated version, Kristen insists, ‘Kids can tell if you’re lying. They’re smart. We broach everything with thoughtful, age-appropriate honesty.’ But there’s one big exception to their honesty policy. Kristen admits that she and Dax have sometimes fudged the truth when it comes to the kids’ birth dates! ‘If it’s, like, a Wednesday and we can’t celebrate and we’re both working late, then – guess what – your birthday is on Saturday,’ she confesses. ‘They don’t know.’ Ha!

‘I try to teach my kids that if they see a problem, they can solve it,’ Kristen shares There were tears aplenty (especially from Dax!) when Lincoln started school
