Under the Chequered Flag

Old Bike Australasia - - BUZZ BOX - from John Johnson

We lost a good friend and speedway identity on the 27th October 2016. LIONEL BENSON was an unassuming, quietly spoken gentleman who reached a high achievement, representing Australia at Wembley in 1952. We watched Moto GP together on the screen on the previous Sunday in Pallative Care, Greenwich Hospital, and with no pain he passed away early Thursday morning. Reading OBA34 I note Ron Miles’ birthday 8th February as the same as Lionel’s – but Lionel was born in Sydney in 1925! He was a direct descendent of John Small and Sarah Parker of the First Fleet. He came to prominence in the 1949-50 season with strong performances at Bathurst, leading to an invitation to join the third division Leicester club in England. His posters of a motorcycle race meeting held at North Ryde in 1932 will be donated with other memorabilia to Bathurst Speedway Museum.
