You can get Out & About with YOUR Kids at a whole host of fantastic family events and fun festivals in the coming months. Wherever you are, it’s a sure bet there’s something on near you, any time of the year, that plays right into the interests, and curiosity, of your family. Here are some of our favourite kids and family events coming up.
Alice Springs, NT – Parrtyeme – A Festival in Light
Australia’s biggest ever light show installation will illuminate the area, including the mighty MacDonnell Ranges, when the first authentic Indigenous light festival of its kind in the world comes to Alice Springs!
From 23 September to 2 October, 2016 the team behind Sydney’s iconic ‘ Vivid Festival’, together with Central Australian Aboriginal artists, will present this breathtaking light and sound display of original, authentic Indigenous art created by local artists, students and the community. Highlights include a series of large illuminated 1950s-style circle skirts featuring the watercolour artwork of Lenie Namatjira, granddaughter of Albert Namatjira.
The event takes its name from the Arrernte word “Parrtma”, meaning “light up” or “lighting up”.
Sunshine Coast, QLD – Caloundra Music Festival
Kicking off on 30 September 2016, and running through to 3 October 2016, the 10th annual Caloundra Music Festival is a four day treat of sun, surf and soul for the whole family, at beautiful Kings Beach on the Sunshine Coast. The not-for-profit familyfriendly community event promises a great line-up of entertainment featuring the best of the Australian music industry, as well as incredible international artists, plus food, arts and local culture.
Cowra, NSW – Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival)
Celebrating the birth of spring, this annual festival attracts performers from around the world giving visitors the opportunity to experience traditional elements of Japanese culture, when the cherry blossoms are at their peak, at the Cowra Japanese Garden on 24 September, 2016. A great day out for the whole family, the festival features entertainment, cultural activities and market stalls.
Sydney, NSW – Kidtopia
This exciting new festival for kids, and their grownups, is headed to Parramatta Park in the October school holidays (7 to 9 October, 2016) bursting with live music, amazing food, and family entertainment in a festival extravaganza jam-packed full of delightful activities and attractions. But Kidtopia is not your usual day out with the kids. Listen to live music or dance like no one’s watching at the silent disco, learn incredible circus tricks, take part in cooking and science workshops, sample delicacies from some of Sydney’s hottest eateries, and finish the day watching a movie under the stars with friends and family. Lithgow, NSW – Halloween Festival
Join in the nighttime excitement that embraces all that is spooky (and fun), when Lithgow transforms into a Halloween street festival spectacle on Saturday, 29 October 2016.
Port Macquarie, NSW – Tastings on Hastings
A Harvest Lunch by the river hosted by chef Matt Golinski, chef Matt Wilkinson’s dinners at The Stunned Mullet, and a pop-up Oyster Barn are just a few of the tasty new events announced for Port Macquarie’s 14th annual Tastings on Hastings to be held 28 to 30 October, 2016. Tastings on Hastings main familyfriendly festival will take place in the town on 30 October with around 120 food, wine, beer, farmers, producers, artisans and makers from around the region.
Bathurst, NSW – Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000
It’s the V8 Supercar event of the year so start revving your engines and grab the perfect track-side seat for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 ( 6 to 9 October, 2016). Mount Panorama comes alive as the legends of past and future push their cars, teams and themselves to the limits, on the ultimate battleground - where a 1,000km endurance race on an unforgiving mountainous track is won and lost in the last lap.
