Indigo supports gay community
INDIGO Shire Council has expressed its support for lesbian and gay people living in the shire’s communities.
Mayor Jenny O’Connor read a statement at the opening of Tuesday’s ordinary monthly council meeting reiterating the agreed position of the council during the current national marriage postal survey.
“As a council we understand that there are different views about same-sex marriage in the community and, indeed, this is reflected in the makeup of the current council,” Cr O’Connor said.
“However, we are all united in our view that we must support and respect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community in Indigo Shire, and mostly particularly our vulnerable young people.
“And so tonight we send a clear message to say that we care about you, that you are valued members of our community and we ask the wider community to ensure that the current debate about marriage equality be conducted respectfully within this shire.”
Cr O’Connor emphasised that the statement was being made for all councillors despite different views among the seven on the question of marriage equality.
“It’s been made in response to the fact that there’s been quite a lot of commentary in the local media and comment to councillors,” she said.
“That’s why we’ve made this statement tonight.”
