CHILDREN from Indigo and Alpine communities have become published authors and illustrators following the release of a book titled ‘The laugh that shook the world’ – a story of one of Australia’s most distinctive birds.

Walkley Award-wining journalist Andrew Perrin launched the book, written by his friend Craig Dent, in Albury on Saturday.

It tells of kookaburras and includes the work of students from Beechworth, Yackandandah, Chiltern and Rutherglen who helped to illustrate the publication.

Others, in groups, wrote “secret stanzas’ – lines of poetry – which were then included in the text.

The collaboration follows a series of interactive children’s book workshops in North East schools and shires earlier this year.

Craig has been a recipient of funding from the Literature Board of the Australia Council for the Arts and was a writer-in-residence at Western Plains Zoo near Dubbo in NSW.

“In designing workshops for schools, it occurred to me that it would be a cool idea to incorporate ideas by students and give them an opportunity to publish,” he said.

“There’s an innovative way we have designed the book to include their work.”

The book has designed by Haylee Codina, a close friend of Craig’s, with drawings by Lauren Habarow and one from Bethany Linquist.

North East students created drawings as their own pictorial interpretations of the story.

Craig had the idea for the book in 2016 during a North East Catchment Management Authority commission to write a book with the people of Benambra.

That title was called ‘Released from the wild’.

“Driving to Benambra from Mitta, we stopped at Lightning Creek, where two kookaburras were pulling worms from the ground, so it gave me an idea,” Craig said.

“I grew up with Ken Maynard’s Ettamogah Pub and loved his funny drawings of animals.”

The collaboration is from this week being celebrated during a tour of North East schools and libraries until November 24.

The Indigo Shire tour included Indigo Shire Library in Rutherglen yesterday, Yackandandah library today at 9.30am, Chiltern library tomorrow at 11am, and Beechworth library on November 24 at 10.30am.

The book is available from Dymocks Bookstores for $20 from Dymocks or can be ordered via email from craig@craigdent.com.au.
