I have long been intrigued by a paragraph in the work diary to be found under the ‘frequently asked questions’ section that reads as follows: “Does a driver who has low English literacy have to use a work diary?”
The answer: “If a driver is unable to make records in a work diary because of inadequate English literacy, the driver may apply to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator ( NHVR) for a work diary exemption permit. The driver must have a nominee who will be able to make work diary records on the driver’s behalf.”
Seriously? We have people out there driving heavy vehicles who are illiterate? Can’t fill out a work diary but can drive a potentially lethal machine.
Guess safety isn’t the issue I thought it was. Lyn Robinson Wangaratta Vic
