US singer-songwriter Conor Oberst’s career has weaved between solo albums and a variety of bands, the most notable being indie rock outfit Bright Eyes. Following 10 years in New York City, Oberst returned to his home town of Omaha, Nebraska in the middle of winter where he quickly crafted 10 new songs for his new solo effort – Ruminations. Playing acoustic guitar, harmonica and piano it’s certainly an “unplugged” album; a sparse backing for Oberst’s emotive vocals. He sings of a fragile existence on ‘Gossamer Thin’ and, with a solo piano backing, he recalls a wild past on ‘The Rain Follows The Plow’. There’s a folk character to much of these tracks, notably ‘Next Of Kin’, with Oberst using a simple piano and harmonica backing, and there’s a musical theatre quality to ‘Tachycardia’. Certainly an introspective album for those quiet times.
