Re: ‘En route to the brink’. Going backwards at a large Melbourne fuel terminal. Drivers’ room reduced in size so it’s full with a dozen blokes. Now the chairs have been taken away as someone decided they are a trip hazard. No loaded trucks are allowed to park in terminal, but it’s okay to leave them out on a public street? Take note owners of these trucks – when the terminal breaks down as it does often, the office/drivers’ room fills up quickly in the hot weather. The rest of the drivers won’t be standing in the sun; they’ll be sitting in the truck with the air-con going! And that’s productivity? Luke Nguyen Re: ‘Manual Labour; it’s the patriotic thing to do’. I do miss floating gears in a RR gear box. I miss the control, the precision and skill of roping each cog smoothly without hesitation. I found driving European trucks with automated manuals fun but the novelty wears off when you realise you have to surrender a certain amount of control to a computer while driving them. I override them just about every down-change so I have control. I control how my load pulls up and it took a bit of getting used to at the start. I agree with old mate, it needs to be an apprenticed job. There is too much at stake safetywise to make access as easy as it has been of late. Kieran Thompson Re: ‘Op Austrans: drug driving concern in Victoria’. That’s less than three per cent. That’s not a drug culture, that’s a copper beating up the figures to make it worse than it really is. This was his shameful excuse for a targeted police operation nationwide on a small, minority group that poses no threat to society and, in fact, were working. If these truckies all had a particular religious preference, or if they all declared themselves gay, the cops would be up for harassment. Which is exactly what it is. Mark Gibson
