Get to know artist Kay Carley

So, what are you working on at the moment, Kay?

It’s been all go for the last few months – I currently have several things on the go at once! I have been trying to find time to draw some new stamp designs and I’ve been designing cards for a class I teach once a month for The Craft Barn at Lingfield Community Centre. As well as designing magazine projects, of course!

Do you have a crafting pet hate?

I’m not sure if I have a pet hate as such, but I do like to have a nice clean cut when using a paper trimmer or guillotine. I don’t like feathery edges (which can happen when blades become blunt) unless I’m going for a distressed look!

Are you a tidy crafter or a creative jumble?

My star sign is Virgo so take a wild guess! I can’t bear mess, I need to know where everything is. When I’m working on a project, the surfaces will be covered with stuff but I keep it all ordered and once I’ve finished everything gets tidied back to its correct place!

What is the best thing about your job?

Oh, that’s an easy one! I love having the opportunity to design my own stamps with PaperArtsy and then be able to work with them – it’s very satisfying. It’s also wonderful seeing what other people create using my stamp designs as they often see different possibilities that I never envisaged. I’ve recently joined Hunkydory’s TV demo team, which I’m SO thrilled about. I have always loved quality products and particularly love the cardstock and all the other products that Hunkydory produce. I honestly have got the ‘ideal job’ and consider myself extremely lucky.

When you’re not papercrafting, what do you do to relax?

I used to enjoy knitting or crocheting in the evenings but nowadays I am really boring and prefer just to collapse in a heap on the settee and watch some TV or read a book.

What are your crafting triumphs?

Having my own stamp range thanks to PaperArtsy was a thrill, plus being accepted as a contributor to UK magazines, like Papercraft inspirations.

What piece of kit couldn’t you live without?

Definitely my quality paper trimmer – I’ve had this particular rotary trimmer for 18 years and it never lets me down.

Do you have a signature style?

Leandra Franich (owner of PaperArtsy) calls me the ‘flittery, glittery princess’ as my style is often quite pretty, delicate and glittery! Although I don’t use tons of glitter, I do like to add sparkly highlights.

What are your future ambitions?

I can honestly say that I am very content with my lot at the moment. I’m able to design stamps under PaperArtsy’s Signature Guest Designer range and be part of Hunkydory’s TV demo team. I feel extremely lucky and fortunate. I guess that my only crafting ambition is to always do the best that I can and to continue enjoying what I do!
