Trimcraft’s Kathy Hodson talks about her passion for crafting and her Christmas loves
We chat to Trimcraft’s Kathy Hodson
What does your job as craft coordinator involve?
It’s my mission to inspire crafters and to showcase the amazing selection of products across all the Trimcraft ranges, which include First Edition, Dovecraft and Simply Creative. A lot of my time is spent creating samples for my shows on Create and Craft TV, as well as designing projects and making video tutorials for The Craft Blog by Trimcraft and our social media.
What do you enjoy about being a demonstrator at Create and Craft TV?
It feels like one big happy family! All the other guests and presenters are so friendly and helpful. There’s a real camaraderie in the green room – sharing hints, tips, craft tools and even hair spray! I also love the thrill of live TV – you never know what’s going to happen on a show, especially if it’s a show with Dean Wilson! He always keeps us laughing.
What is your crafting background?
I have always enjoyed gathering materials and crafting them into something completely different. There’s something so therapeutic about the creative process, it allows you to feel proud of something you’ve made by hand. As a child, I was drawn to craft kits and tried my hand at calligraphy, jewellery making with soft clays, flower pressing and cross-stitch. Now, my home is full of items I have made. I get such satisfaction when they are displayed and, of course, the admiring comments don’t hurt either!
What are your favourite papercrafting techniques?
Découpage is the craft that made me believe I could have a creative career. I was introduced to the technique at a local craft café and was hooked. After that, nothing in the house was safe from the glue brush – I upcycled photo frames, pots, candleholders, even furniture! I started selling découpaged noticeboards and plaques, which led me to other papercrafts. I now have an electronic cutting machine for cards and off- the-page crafts such as gift boxes and paper bowls.
What craftiness do you like to get up to at Christmas?
A few years ago, I made an Advent calendar from gold card and twine, which comes out every December. Each year, I make a wreath and other decorations. Over the festive period, I like to spend time with my children, baking biscuits that we ice and hang on the tree.
What’s your favourite Trimcraft range this season?
So tough! If I had to choose just one, I’d say it would be the Time to Sparkle range from Dovecraft.
